People of color SPECIFICALLY should wear sunscreen because according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, the 5-year melanoma survival rate for black people in the United States is 71%, compared with 93% for white people. While black people are getting melanoma less, we are dying more frequently than others.

SPF stands for sun protection factor which measures how long a sunscreen will protect you from ultraviolet (UV) rays. For reference SPF 15 sunscreen blocks 93% of UVB rays, SPF 30 sunscreen protects 97% of UVB rays and SPF 50 blocks 98% of UVB rays. We suggest using an SPF 30 or SPF 50 as this will provide adequate protection and coverage.

UVA rays are the ultraviolet rays that are responsible for aging while UVB rays are the ultraviolet rays that are responsible for burning.

Oxybenzone is a chemical ingredient found in most sunscreens that is absorbed into the body. When used in sunscreen and worn in the ocean it can cause harm to marine life and coral reefs.

We suggest applying Black Girl Sunscreen on your face and body as it contains additional moisturizing ingredients to protect and moisturize the skin.

For increased effectiveness, we recommend reapplying sunscreen every two hours. Learn how often to reapply your sunscreen, here.
